Dave Blinder filed this report: "I was at DeKorte for 2 or 3 hours Tuesday (late morning/early afternoon). I encountered the Northern Shrike at noon just before the start of the Transco Trail. It was chasing a small songbird. Action took place too quickly to identify the escapee, but it landed safely in a dense pine tree.
"The shrike took up a perch near the "stone auditorium" for a couple of minutes. The shrike then flew away quickly, but seemed to be heading toward the Lyndhurst Nature Reserve area.
"While I was trying to sneak up on some Gadwalls in the cove, an unsuspecting Killdeer flew in very close to me, making for some great photo ops.
"I didn't come across any Sparrows aside from Song Sparrows, but I did see a small hawk shoot across the road when I was leaving via Valley Brook.
"It perched briefly and revealed itself as an adult hawk of the Accipiter sort.
"I haven't studied the photo much yet, but it will either be an adult male Coop (too small for female) or decent-sized Sharp-shinned." (Thanks, Dave!)

I believe this is a Cooper's Hawk due to the rounded tail feathers.
